Abstract:
This dataset consists of a determination of the land-water interface at the Salton Sea, California. The interface was determined via a partially automated and partially manual process. In the automated phase of the interpolation process, DOQQ imagery was rendered into pixels in an ArcInfo GRID file. Using the GRID command, CELLVALUE, the user sampled the image to determine what values typify the land-water interface for a given area, and generate a polygon coverage by separating pixels with a value greater from those with a lesser value than that identified through CELLVALUE. The results were then compared to the images, and a final interpolation of linework was manually assembled in ArcEdit from the arcs considered acceptable.
Purpose:
A precise shoreline was required for wetlands and bathymetric mapping, whose elevation could be precisely known, since no other legitimate, cartographic baseline was available. The shoreline determination was accurate to approximately two meters, or the limitations of the imagery, which ranges from one or two meters in the center of the image to five to seven meters on the margins. Although the error increases on the margins, the imagery has 10-30% overlap on all edges, so the actual error is limited to approximately 5 meters.
