Description:
Abstract:
This coverage depicts the highest stand, since its formation in 1905, of the Salton Sea, the latest incarnation of the prehistoric Lake Cahuilla. The highest level of the Sea was determined by referring to a list of historical elevations, collected monthly or daily, since the lake's year of formation. This level was achieved in 1906, shortly after which the breach was sealed, and inflow stopped. This coverage was developed by separating cells in the 30 meter digital elevation model of the Salton Sea Basin which have elevation values below the -196 elevation mark versus those that are above, and generating a polygon coverage from the results. The linework was then generalized with a weed tolerance of 20 meters to smooth the "squared cell boundaries" typical of data generated from a raster data source.
Purpose:
This coverage has been provided to indicate, in general, for cartographic purposes the highest elevation the Salton Sea has achieved since its reformation in 1905. This may be important when considering impacts of restoration alternatives and the placement of landuse in the region.
Supplemental_Information:
The highest elevation the Salton Sea has attained was achieved in 1906, shortly after which the breach in the canals in Mexico were sealed, and inflow ceased. This resulted in the lowering of the Sea for a time until the inception of agriculture in the Imperial Valley, which gradually achieved an equilibrium in the late 1950's balancing inflow with evaporation.
