Abstract:
This dataset is comprised of the census areas used to assemble bird species identifications and counts in the development of the "Guide to the Birds of the Salton Sea", by Barbara Massey and Richard Zembal. Barbara provided text descriptions of her census areas, which were then photo interpreted to determine a boundary to the feature or site specified, which when combined with the statistics gathered during the field data collection also provided areal and density assessments of the sites. The census areas were also used as the reporting unit (which became the chapter headings in the book) for statistical compilations, and to calculate the percent coverage by length of the shoreline of the Salton Sea that this study comprised.
Purpose:
This book was assembled to present a summary of species usage of the sites historically, to compile statistics on occurrences, density and overall numbers of birds present, and to provide directions to and descriptions of the sites ideal for bird watching.
Supplemental_Information:
Automation of site boundaries was an iterative process requiring several rounds to convert text descriptions into the actual sites intended. Visibility was assumed from weather conditions, so some polygons were extended out over the water of the Salton Sea via a buffer. Some features on land, like duck clubs, were inferred from very faint signatures on the imagery, and so are approximately located.
