Description:

Abstract:: This dataset is comprised of the water bodies found within the census areas used to assemble bird species identifications and counts in the development of the book, "Guide to the Birds of the Salton Sea", by Barbara Massey and Richard Zembal. Barbara provided text descriptions of her census areas, which were then photointerpreted to determine a boundary to the feature or site specified, which when combined with the statistics gathered during the field data collection also provided areal and density assessments of the sites. The census areas were also used as the reporting unit (which became the chapter headings in the book) for statistical compilations, and to calculate the percent coverage by length of the shoreline of the Salton Sea that this study comprised. Actual water boundaries were required for graphic depiction of these observation sites, since roosting and nesting around the Sea often involve the use of water bodies for protection.
Purpose:: This book was assembled to present a summary of species usage of the sites historically, to compile statistics on occurrences, density and overall numbers of birds present, and to provide directions to and descriptions of the sites ideal for bird watching.
Supplemental_Information:: Automation of water boundaries was conducted versus the Digital Orthophotograph files available for the area. These interpretations were also coded for actual presence of water on the imagery, since many sites area seasonal. In addition, some features, like duck clubs, were inferred from very faint signatures on the imagery, due to their seasonal nature, and so had to be approximately located.
