Description:

Abstract:

This dataset is comprised of special roosting locations near water bodies used by the birds at night. These are found generally within the census areas used to assemble information for the development of the book, "Guide to the Birds of the Salton Sea", by Barbara Massey and Richard Zembal. Several researchers provided text descriptions and GPS coordinates for these roosting areas, which were then photo interpreted to yield a boundary for the feature. Actual roosting area features and boundaries were required for cartographic depiction of these observation features.

Purpose:

This book was assembled to present a summary of species usage of the sites historically, to compile statistics on occurrences, density and overall numbers of birds present, and to provide directions to and descriptions of the sites ideal for bird watching.

Supplemental_Information:

Automation of roosting areas was conducted versus the Digital Orthophotograph files available for the area, since many could be actually located or inferred from image signatures. For example, some features, like duck clubs, were inferred from very faint signatures on the imagery, and so had to be approximately located.
