Abstract:
This dataset is comprised of the water bodies used by the bird population for roosting at night, as determined by the field work conducted in support of the book, "Guide to the Birds of the Salton Sea", by Barbara Massey and Richard Zembal. Barbara provided text descriptions of the water bodies where counts were taken, which were then photo interpreted to generate a boundary for the water body specified. Actual water boundaries were required for graphic depiction of these observation sites, since roosting and nesting around the Sea often involve the use of water bodies for protection from predators, and are often close to food sources.
Purpose:
This book was assembled to present a summary of species usage of the sites historically, to compile statistics on occurrences, density and overall numbers of birds present, and to provide directions to and descriptions of the sites ideal for bird watching. The water bodies were delineated to permit cartographic representation of the features in the maps published in the Guidebook.
Supplemental_Information:
Automation of water boundaries was conducted versus the Digital Orthophotograph files available for the area. These interpretations were also coded for actual presence of water on the imagery, since many sites area seasonal in nature. In addition, some features, like duck clubs, were inferred from very faint signatures on the imagery, and consequently were approximately located.
