This dataset presents several locations for the pump in or pump out pipelines for moving water in, out or around the Salton Sea as part of the Bureau of Reclamation restoration alternative evaluation conducted in 1999. Pipelines are one of the most often suggested alternatives for the restoration of the Sea, but generally have a significant environmental impact outside the immediate area of the Sea, and are one of the most cost-prohibitive in terms of capital outlay required to initiate the project.

This coverage was developed for cartographic display and analysis of several likely locations for pipeline-related infrastructure, and for visualizing how the physical footprint might look.

'The Salton Sea Authority is a joint powers agency chartered by the State of California by a Joint Powers Agreement on June 2, 1993 for the purpose of ensuring the beneficial uses of the Salton Sea. In the agreement, "beneficial use" includes the primary purpose of the Sea as a depository for agricultural drainage, storm water and wastewater flows; for protection of endangered species, fisheries and waterfowl; and for recreational purposes.' Due to rising salinity, period fish die-offs and bird mortality events, the need for a restoration alternative to address these problems was identified. The first agency response was from the US Bureau of Reclamation.
